How To:

Step 1: Choose your location - Hummingbirds and butterflies thrive in sunny areas, therefore, select a location that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.

Step 2: Choose your plants - Native plants are the best option for your hummingbird and butterfly garden since they will attract the local species. Some of the best plants to include are: bee balm, milkweed, black-eyed susan, lavender, and coneflowers.

Step 3: Create layers - Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to a variety of plant heights in your garden so make sure to include plants of varying heights to create interest and depth.

Step 4: Provide food and water - In addition to nectar-rich flowers, providing a shallow bowl of fresh water for butterflies to drink from and a hummingbird feeder with nectar water will ensure these creatures have a steady supply of food and water.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Include plants with varying bloom times to ensure nectar is available all season long.
  • Use pesticides sparingly or not at all to avoid harming the delicate butterflies and hummingbirds.
  • Add a small rock or boulder to provide a spot for basking butterflies to soak up the sun.
